I will never forget my holiday weekend in Fire Island last summer. I was expecting to relax by the water, stroll along in the sand, and listen to meditative music, maybe get a tan. Ha! Was I wrong.
Within 2 hours of our arrival, we discovered that the host of our house where we were staying was diagnosed with breast cancer. In fact, her two doctors, both friends told her right there and then. They had learned the results of her tests earlier that day and knew that they would be on the island that evening. How did our host handle this news? With a party. For real. All in. I joined the festivities with cooking and drinking. I was new to this group and was not about to set a different tone. There are pictures of us being quite silly, dancing with who knows what on our heads. But when the morning came, things looked and felt a bit different. That’s when I approached Vera and offered her an integrative healing treatment. She accepted. Energy therapy was new to her but she was open and willing to try this holistic medicine.
